Launching the Turkana School

Latest Update: Getting water to this village was the primary endeavor in 2023. Due to your generous donations, Unusual Soldiers established a water well at a Turkana village that was suffering. As a result, a school was relaunched with a government-paid teacher. Our next goals for this particular village are to supply a water trough for their animals, a mode of transportation for their teacher, and curriculum books for the children. There are a number of other projects being discussed for this village as well, but we are taking one step at a time. The extra funds from the Turkana water initiative this past year will give us a boost to make some of these projects a reality, however some of the projects in this area go beyond our current budget.

Prayer request: A couple weeks ago, there was a conflict near this village/school. Please continue to pray for safety and peace as there have been recent reports of bandits in this region.

Mission: Assist the school with education at the remote Turkana village
Goals:

  • $5,000 - $10,000 for school supplies, water trough, and a mode of transportation (motorcycle or car) for school/teacher.

——-THE WATER INITIATIVE BELOW WAS ACCOMPLISHED IN SEPTEMBER 2023——

  • Completed in September 2023: $25,000 Drill and install a solar-powered Water well

  • Completed in September 2023: Get a Teacher for the school

——THE INITIAL INITIATIVE BELOW WAS ACCOMPLISHED IN 2022——-

There is currently a drought in Northern Kenya that has caused a great deal of suffering to the Turkana and Samburu tribes, and it’s making its way to the Maasai tribal region.  These semi-nomadic tribes depend on animals for survival making the drought all the more devastating. (Click here for a recent video about the drought ).  To top it off these tribes have a history of being at odds with each other and it’s been said to be a violent area. A couple of months ago 14 people were killed during a cattle raid. (Click here for a video about the conflict.)

The struggles that these tribes are enduring are much bigger than what Unusual Soldiers and NGO’s can meet, but this small group of Maasai feels led to do something. The Maasai are hoping to bless 30 Samburu families and 30 Turkana families with food and spiritual encouragement (as well as 30 suffering Maasai families). They are praying that God may use them to inspire a heart of peace in some of the tribal areas they encounter. We pray this initial engagement will be the beginning of greater things to come. There is a much bigger/long-term vision in discussion, but nothing will be decided until after these men scout the area, make contacts, and bless the people.

None of these Maasai have been to this arid region before, but the leader of this group has a heart for difficult areas and has been dreaming of ministering there for six years. They have few contacts and for the most part, are driving into tribal regions that are unknown to them. They will be seeking the Lord’s guidance and protection as they hope to find favor with the people and bless them with survival supplies in the name of Jesus.

If you would like to be a part of this mission, then there are two ways you can get involved:

1. ZOOM PRAYER MEETING

You can join myself and the Maasai for a Commissioning Prayer Meeting on Sunday at 10 am (CENTRAL). It’ll last about 45 minutes. Sorry, I know it’s during church for some of you. We have just decided to include our Youth Sunday School class join in the prayer meeting.

2. DONATE TO HELP MOBILIZE THE MAASAI

If you’d like to give towards this mission then the current breakdown of finances is listed below. You can give to the mission by giving to unusualsoldiers.com/donate and selecting the purpose: Maasai Mission trip Expense:

  • “$1,500'“ for transport, lodging, and food
